Government Agencies

Government agencies play a significant role in fostering entrepreneurship and supporting small businesses. These agencies offer a variety of resources, including funding, training, support services, and access to information that can help entrepreneurs navigate the challenges of starting and growing their businesses. 


Michigan Economic Development Corporation

Description: The MEDC is the state’s primary economic development agency, providing various programs and services to support entrepreneurs, such as funding, grants, and access to capital. It also offers support through SmartZones, which are specially designated areas to support high-tech businesses and startups. 

- Michigan Small Business Development Center (SBDC): Offers free consulting services, training, and research support for small businesses. 

- MI-STEP: Assists businesses looking to expand internationally with export support. 


Michigan Small Business Development Center (SBDC)

Description:  Offers free business consulting, market research, and educational resources to help entrepreneurs develop business plans, secure funding, and scale operations. It’s a part of a nationwide network but specific to Michigan. 

- Business Consulting: Includes financial, marketing, and strategic advice. 

- Training Programs: Provides educational workshops on topics like business planning, digital marketing, and exporting. 


Michigan Works Association

Description:  Michigan Works! helps with workforce development, supporting entrepreneurs by providing assistance with recruiting, training, and developing skilled labor. Many of its resources are tailored to small and new businesses in need of early-stage staffing and are generally low or no-cost.  

- Talent Recruitment and Training Programs: Offers resources for recruiting and training new employees. 

- Business Consulting Services: Provides support in workforce planning and compliance assistance.
